Abstract

The core aspect of Origen’s biblical hermeneutics is the connection between the Bible and philosophy. To explain the many problems he detected in the biblical texts, Origen employed the philological techniques that had been developed in Alexandrian philology and were taught in the grammatical schools of the Roman Imperial era. Furthermore, he drew upon the main subjects of the so-called “liberal education” (enkýklios paideía, artes liberales), including not only geometry and astronomy, but also philosophy, as auxiliaries of biblical exegesis. The hermeneutical basis of this programme is the assumption that the Bible and the world are based on the same principle of rationality (the Greek lógos) and are thus accessible to human reason. Because of this analogy, all human knowledge can be used to understand the Bible. Furthermore, for Origen, an authentic understanding of the world was the prerequisite for a true understanding of the Bible. The achievement of this biblical hermeneutics and theory of science was ambivalent: on the one hand, Origen ascribed essential value to the subjects of general education, the sciences, and philosophy for Christian education and biblical interpretation and thus integrated all these subjects into the Christian educational canon; on the other hand, the subjects of science and philosophy were subordinate to biblical exegesis and Christian theology. Only in modern times was philosophy established as an independent discipline, yet it remained an integral part of theology, which also developed as an independent discipline. Origen laid the foundations for this development with his philosophical exegesis and his Christian theory of science.
